Pigs, who are well-known for being as intelligent as three-year old children, may soon be facing slaughterhouse conditions that will increase their odds of being boiled alive in scalding-hot water. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed a new rule that will revoke maximum kill line speeds which will cause more pigs to be subjected to this horrendous and merciless fate. We must speak up now to stop this!
Former slaughterhouse worker Scott David, recounts his first-hand experience with the horrendously fast slaughter speeds enforced:
“I witnessed workers routinely taking shortcuts in humane handling in an effort to keep up with the faster-than-normal slaughter line speeds permitted under HIMP (the High Speed, reduced Inspection Program). I saw sick and injured animals, too weak to stand, roughly shoved out of pens to keep the lines moving.”

Current regulations under the Food and Safety Inspection Service allow 1,106 pigs to be killed per hour, which means 18 pigs can be rushed through the slaughter line every single minute, or one pig in just over three seconds. These high numbers are responsible for the ineffective stunning of many pigs who are often electrocuted, beaten and scalded alive.
Already, pigs are often treated in ways that do not abide by the “Humane Slaughter of Livestock Regulations.” We must not let the USDA allow even more suffering to these defenseless animals. If you care about pigs at all, please help us put a stop to this!

You can say something like, “Hi, I’d like to leave a message for Carmen Rottenberg regarding my opposition to The New Swine Slaughter Inspection System. A move by the USDA to waive maximum line speeds, which are already far too high at 18 pigs per minute, would completely disregard the safety of 250,000 working Americans, immense animal suffering, and food safety.”
3. Send our automated letter, by filling out the form on the right-hand side of this page, to the Food Safety and Inspection Service demanding that it rejects this negligent proposal.
